Domain Authority & Page Rank, What’s It All About?

Domain Authority & Page Rank, What’s It All About? When it comes to link building, you normally get this question of what’s your site’s domain authority and page rank? Normally the domain authority and page rank denote quality of a site when appraising it for your link building strategy. Page rank is a Google’s terminology for determining authority of a page based on several factors (sometimes they claim it as many as 200 factors). Even though it sounds as it’s named after a page that is ranking, but the reality is that its named after the Google’s engineer named Larry Page who created this page rank think we are talking about. Page rank is measured on a scale of 0-10, 10 being the highest authority page. Domain authority is a relatively new term which is introduced by SEO tycoon SEOMOZ, an authority over subjects related to search engine optimization, particularly Google. Domain authority is similar to Moz ranking but on a scale of 0-100, 100 being the top domain authority. SEO Moz also uses tens of factors to produce a final domain authority or DA including several factors that Google considers in its Page ranking. There is no specific list of factors that determine both page rank and domain authority but the main criteria both parties use to bring their authority scoring is domain age, content quality, linking profiles, OBLs, content frequency, social media indicators, website design and layout, website speed etc. A Common Mistake, Read This Carefully: If you are seeking a link to an authority website and taking your decision based on DA and PR, then you must be careful that domain authority is not as quickly updated as Page rank. What it means is that if a site has been penalized by Google or banned for that matter, its PR will drop to zero or to a question mark (?), however the DA will not go down to zero as both parties use their own factors to evaluate a site’s strength. So just be careful that you don’t take decision only on one factor, rather use both DA and PR to make sure they both go hands in hands. I have developed a formula that you can use to get a mean value of both and it will help you decide which site to go for and which not if you are seeking a high quality link. Here is how I calculate it: Use the value of DA as is, let’s say, DA of a domain is 40. Now have a look at the PR, multiply PR with 10 or simply ad a zero on the right side of the PR. Let’s say the site in question has a PR of 3. After multiplying we get the figure of 30. Combine both 40 and 30 and it will give you a value of 70. If the combined value is greater than 60 then it’s safer to go for that link. This is from my personal experience. If the total value is below 60 then it’s better to search for another site. I will name it as SEOJUNKY RANK 🙂 It’s highly unlikely that a 60 DA will have zero PR. And it’s highly unlikely either that a PR 3 will have less than 30 DA, so an ultimate SEOJUNKY rank of 60 is a very right figure for you to trust a site. Other factors to consider! Even through DA and PR could be decisive factors, i would highly recommend that you also check the following factors before requesting a link, viz;
  • Facebook likes
  • Twitter follower
  • LinkedIn connections
  • IP of the site
  • Alexa ranking
This will help you in determining the site’s overall traffic and will help you boost your site not in terms of SERP but also in terms of continued traffic. Best of luck! If you liked the article, please care to share.
